How it works
Understand the formula before you use the result
The calculator uses a simple working formula so you can sense-check the result quickly and explain it clearly inside your business.
Tradie quote formula
Labour total = labour hours × labour rate
Subtotal before markup = labour total + material cost + additional costs
Markup amount = subtotal before markup × markup %
Subtotal after markup = subtotal before markup + markup amount
GST amount = subtotal after markup × 10% if GST is enabled
Final quote total = subtotal after markup + GST amount
This is a simple estimating tool for building a quote figure quickly. You can still adjust for risk, call-out minimums, scope gaps, or project-specific terms.
Worked example
See the numbers in a realistic scenario
Use the example below as a sense check when you compare the calculator result to a real quote, sale, or pricing decision.
Worked example
Worked example: quoting a small trade job
A tradie expects 8 labour hours at $110 per hour, $350 of materials, $90 of extra costs, 20% markup, and wants GST included.
- Labour hours: 8
- Labour rate per hour: $110
- Material cost: $350
- Additional costs: $90
- Markup: 20%
- GST included: Yes
Calculation steps
- Labour total = 8 × $110 = $880
- Subtotal before markup = $880 + $350 + $90 = $1,320
- Markup amount = $1,320 × 20% = $264
- Subtotal after markup = $1,320 + $264 = $1,584
- GST amount = $1,584 × 10% = $158.40
- Final quote total = $1,584 + $158.40 = $1,742.40
The job quote comes to $1,742.40 including GST, based on the entered labour, materials, costs, and markup.

FAQ
Common questions about the tradie quote calculator
These are the practical questions operators usually run into when they apply the result to a real business decision.
Should I use markup or margin on a quote?
Many tradies think in markup because they start from labour and material cost. It is still worth checking margin separately if you want to protect profitability consistently.
What should I include in additional costs?
Typical extras include travel, waste removal, equipment hire, subcontractors, permits, parking, or other direct job costs not already in labour or materials.
What happens if I turn GST off?
The final quote total will remain ex-GST, which can be useful for internal estimating or where you need to show the pre-GST figure first.
