FAQ

Common questions

Can I use both?
Yes, many AU sole traders do. Up as the operating account (because of the bucketing), and Macquarie as the FX card for international transactions. Both are free, so the only cost is mental overhead.
Are these business accounts?
Technically no — both are everyday personal transaction accounts. But because sole traders aren't legally required to have a dedicated business account (you and your business are the same legal entity), either works fine. See our separate guide on whether AU sole traders need a separate business bank account.
What about Wise for international?
Wise is better for receiving international payments (you get local USD/EUR/GBP account details, so clients can pay you as a local bank transfer). Macquarie is better for spending overseas on the card. Many AU sole traders running international clients use Wise + Up + Macquarie together.
Is my money safe in either?
Yes. Both are AU ADIs (Authorised Deposit-taking Institutions) — your money is covered by the Australian Government Financial Claims Scheme up to $250,000 per ADI. Same protection as a big-4 bank account.
